Factom (FCT) is a blockchain powered data ledger, similar in function to a transaction ledger, but which stores, logs, processes and verifies data as opposed to currency transactions. The firm’s motto is ‘Making the world’s systems honest..,’ and they do this by providing a service where documentation can be stored, updated and permanently recorded on the blockchain.
Factom was founded in 2014 by Paul Snow and David Johnston. The Texas based company nudged its way into the blockchain-as-a-service (BAAS) market, and can now point to business links with the United States Department of Home Security, as well as the Gutenberg Project, which digitizes and uploads old cultural works.
Factom allows users to edit documents on the blockchain while still ensuring its legitimacy. Proof of Existence verifies the presence of a document on the blockchain. Proof of Process links the old document with the new document. Proof of Audit is a verification system which can be set up with a set of criteria to validate changes between the old and new form of the document.
