DogeOS Opens Testnet to Bring Apps and Games to Dogecoin

DogeOS has opened its public testnet, giving developers a new way to build decentralized applications on top of the Dogecoin network without changing the core blockchain.
The project, developed by the team behind the MyDoge wallet, is designed to add functionality similar to what Ethereum offers while keeping Dogecoin's base layer unchanged. Dogecoin was launched in 2013 by Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus as a joke but has since grown into one of the largest cryptocurrency networks.
DogeOS operates as a separate application layer built on Dogecoin. Its documentation describes the network as an application-layer rollup running on a zero-knowledge virtual machine, or zkVM. The technology generates cryptographic proofs that transactions have been processed correctly.
The network is also compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing developers to use existing Ethereum smart contracts, wallets and other tools when building applications for DogeOS.
DOGE is used to pay transaction fees on the testnet. Developers and users can also receive 42.069 test DOGE each day through the project's faucet.
Several projects are already preparing applications for the new network. Superposition Finance is developing a lending platform, while Derps is working on a perpetual trading exchange. USDoge is building a stablecoin backed by locked collateral, and Snag is developing a prediction market aggregator.
Gaming is another major focus. PlaysOut plans to release around 15 Dogecoin-themed casual games through the DogeOS application layer. The games are designed to use DOGE as part of their reward systems and will be accessible through the MyDoge wallet and PlaysOut's mobile app.
DogeOS founder and CEO Jordan Jefferson said the testnet marks a step toward turning Dogecoin from a cryptocurrency into a broader application ecosystem.
Dogecoin Foundation director Timothy Stebbing also emphasized that the project is intended to preserve Dogecoin's existing base layer while adding functionality above it.
Keeping the core network unchanged is important because changes to Dogecoin itself can take considerable time. The DogeOS team previously proposed adding zero-knowledge proof technology directly to Dogecoin's base layer, but such a change would require review from developers and contributors, security testing, community discussion and support from miners.
The application-layer approach allows developers to experiment without requiring a direct modification of the Dogecoin blockchain.
The launch comes as Dogecoin continues to trade well below its previous all-time high, despite growing interest in investment products linked to the cryptocurrency. Several Dogecoin exchange-traded funds have also entered the market.
DogeOS has not yet announced a specific date for launching its mainnet, meaning the network remains in its testing phase and is not yet operating with real funds.
