UK Court Secures $7B Bitcoin Guilty Plea in Record Crypto Laundering Case

A UK court has secured a historic conviction after Chinese national Zhimin Qian, also known as Yadi Zhang, pleaded guilty to possessing criminal property worth 61,000 Bitcoin—nearly $7 billion at current value.
The plea concludes a sweeping seven-year investigation into one of the world’s most significant cryptocurrency money laundering operations. Authorities uncovered that between 2014 and 2017, Qian orchestrated a fraudulent investment network that defrauded 128,000 victims before converting the illicit gains into Bitcoin.
Qian fled China in 2018 under false documentation, later attempting to disguise the digital fortune through property purchases in the UK, aided by accomplice Jian Wen. The Metropolitan Police ultimately seized 61,000 Bitcoin between 2018 and 2021—now recognized as the largest crypto seizure ever recorded.
Wen was convicted in 2024, sentenced to over six years in prison, and ordered to repay more than $3 million. Qian, now in custody, awaits sentencing following her guilty plea.
Civil proceedings will determine whether defrauded investors can reclaim any of the funds, though experts warn proving legal ownership will be “a considerable challenge.”
Authorities underscored the global implications of the case, noting how cryptocurrencies have become a favored tool for organized crime. The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling such networks, warning that fraudsters cannot indefinitely shield their wealth behind blockchain anonymity.
