Mark Cuban Cuts Bitcoin Exposure as Gold Outpaces Crypto During Market Turmoil

Billionaire entrepreneur and former Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban says he has significantly reduced his exposure to Bitcoin, arguing that the leading digital asset has not behaved like the safe-haven investment he once believed it could become.
Speaking during a recent sports business interview, Cuban explained that he previously viewed Bitcoin as a stronger alternative to gold, especially during periods of economic uncertainty and weakening confidence in fiat currencies. However, recent market performance has shifted his outlook.
According to Cuban, the disconnect became clear as gold prices surged during heightened geopolitical tensions and macroeconomic instability, while Bitcoin moved in the opposite direction. He noted that the cryptocurrency failed to respond the way many investors expected during periods of dollar weakness and global uncertainty.
Bitcoin was trading near $77,600 on Thursday, remaining far below its previous record highs after an extended period of volatility. Over the past year, the asset has struggled to maintain momentum despite growing institutional adoption and wider recognition across financial markets. Meanwhile, gold has delivered stronger gains, reinforcing its long-standing reputation as a defensive asset during turbulent economic conditions.
Cuban said he has now sold “most” of his Bitcoin holdings, marking a sharp shift from his earlier bullish stance. In previous years, he frequently argued that Bitcoin could eventually challenge gold as a store of value and benefit from inflationary pressures in the global economy.
The billionaire also criticized the broader crypto market, particularly meme tokens and speculative blockchain projects. He described much of the current “token” sector as lacking meaningful utility and dismissed meme coins as unsustainable hype-driven assets.
His comments extended beyond Bitcoin to other corners of the digital asset industry, including NFTs, which he once actively supported. Cuban acknowledged that while blockchain technology still holds potential, the industry has yet to produce a widely accessible application capable of attracting mainstream everyday users.
Despite his growing skepticism, Cuban has remained one of the most recognizable high-profile investors involved in crypto over the past several years. He previously backed NFTs, publicly discussed blockchain innovation, and embraced Dogecoin as a payment option for merchandise during his ownership of the Mavericks.
