Metaplanet Reaches 43,000 BTC, Secures Third Spot Among Corporate Bitcoin Holders

Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has strengthened its position in the corporate Bitcoin race after increasing its holdings to 43,000 BTC, making it the third-largest publicly known corporate Bitcoin treasury globally.
The Tokyo-listed company disclosed that it acquired an additional 2,823 Bitcoin during the second quarter of 2026, spending roughly $170.7 million on the purchase. The latest accumulation lifted the company's total Bitcoin reserves to approximately 43,000 BTC, currently valued at around $2.6 billion based on market prices.
Following the announcement, Metaplanet's shares climbed 3.5% to 207 yen ($1.28), reflecting positive investor sentiment surrounding its continued Bitcoin accumulation strategy.
According to the company, the newly acquired Bitcoin was purchased at an average price of about 12.71 million yen ($80,000) per coin. After factoring in revenue generated through its Bitcoin Income Generation business, the effective acquisition cost declined to roughly 12.09 million yen ($77,000) per BTC.
That income-focused division contributed approximately 1.75 billion yen ($10.85 million) in operating revenue during the quarter, bringing first-half revenue to around 4.72 billion yen. Over the past 12 months, the business has generated roughly 11.4 billion yen, highlighting its growing role in supporting the firm's treasury strategy.
Overall, Metaplanet has invested about 659.25 billion yen (approximately $4.2 billion) into building its Bitcoin reserve. As of June 30, those holdings were valued near 409 billion yen ($2.6 billion), resulting in an average acquisition cost of approximately 15.33 million yen ($102,500) per Bitcoin across its entire portfolio.
The company also reported a quarterly BTC Yield of 6.6%, a performance metric used to measure Bitcoin growth on a per-share basis. The indicator has become a key benchmark for firms adopting Bitcoin-focused treasury strategies.
Metaplanet's rapid rise places it behind only Strategy and Twenty One Capital in the global corporate Bitcoin rankings, surpassing several other major institutional holders, including MARA Holdings.
The milestone drew recognition from Strategy Executive Chairman Michael Saylor, who congratulated the company on social media, describing its achievement as further evidence that corporate Bitcoin treasury strategies are expanding beyond the United States.
Since embracing Bitcoin as its primary treasury reserve asset in 2024, Metaplanet has aggressively expanded its holdings through a mix of equity financing, debt issuance, and options-based strategies. The company says its Bitcoin Income Generation business, which utilizes Bitcoin options to generate recurring revenue, helps finance additional purchases while reducing the need for excessive shareholder dilution.
Despite its rapid expansion, Metaplanet maintains what it describes as a conservative balance sheet. Debt and preferred stock account for only about 23% of the net asset value of its Bitcoin holdings, leaving the company with additional capacity to continue growing its reserve.
With a strategy that combines long-term Bitcoin accumulation and recurring income generation, Metaplanet continues to establish itself as one of the leading corporate advocates for Bitcoin adoption while reinforcing Japan's growing influence in the global digital asset market.
