Bukele Marks Bitcoin Law Anniversary with $2.3M BTC Purchase

El Salvador has reaffirmed its commitment to Bitcoin with a symbolic new purchase. On September 7, President Nayib Bukele announced that the nation acquired 21 BTC—worth roughly $2.3 million—in celebration of the fourth anniversary of its historic Bitcoin Law, which made the cryptocurrency legal tender in 2021.
“Buying 21 bitcoin for Bitcoin Day,” Bukele declared in a post on X. With this latest acquisition, El Salvador’s national Bitcoin reserves now total approximately 6,313 BTC, valued at around $701.8 million at current market prices.
The move comes just one week after the country’s Bitcoin office distributed its holdings across 14 wallets as a safeguard against emerging threats, including those posed by quantum computing. Meanwhile, the government has continued to accumulate Bitcoin on a daily basis, quietly adding 1 BTC every day, according to official updates.
This strategy contrasts with a July filing to the IMF in which El Salvador’s finance minister and central bank president indicated the nation had halted Bitcoin acquisitions earlier in the year as part of an ongoing loan agreement. Bukele, however, has remained defiant, writing in March: “If it didn’t stop when the world ostracized us and most ‘bitcoiners’ abandoned us, it won’t stop now, and it won’t stop in the future.”
Alongside its steady accumulation, El Salvador’s legislature recently approved measures to expand digital asset services, allowing licensed institutions to offer Bitcoin- and crypto-based products to sophisticated investors. The anniversary purchase highlights the government’s intention to anchor Bitcoin deeper into its national strategy, despite global scrutiny and IMF pressure.
