Metaplanet Scoops Up $632.5M in Bitcoin, Vaulting to Fifth-Largest Corporate Holder

Japanese bitcoin treasury powerhouse Metaplanet has executed its largest digital asset purchase to date, snapping up 5,419 BTC for about $632.5 million. The deal, disclosed Monday by CEO Simon Gerovich on X, was struck at an average price of roughly $116,724 per coin.

This move raises Metaplanet’s total stash to 25,555 BTC, accumulated for approximately $2.71 billion at an average of $106,065 per bitcoin. The haul propels Metaplanet into the ranks of the world’s biggest corporate bitcoin holders—fifth overall—now ahead of Bullish and trailing only Strategy, Mara, XXI, and Bitcoin Standard Treasury Company. Strategy, helmed by Michael Saylor, remains the dominant leader with 638,985 BTC.

The aggressive buying spree follows the firm’s earlier announcement to raise $1.4 billion through a 385 million-share issuance, earmarked for additional bitcoin acquisitions. To complement its treasury growth, Metaplanet’s board recently approved a U.S. offshoot, Metaplanet Income Corp., aimed at expanding bitcoin-based income streams such as derivatives trading.

Market reaction has been mixed: shares slipped 0.5% midday Monday in Tokyo, extending a 27.5% drop over the past month. Yet Metaplanet’s stock remains up a robust 73.85% year-to-date, with U.S.-listed shares closing last Friday at $4.09, up 3.81%.
