SBI Backs Startale With $50M to Accelerate Japan’s Tokenized Finance Plans

Startale Group has secured a major boost in its push to modernize Japan’s financial infrastructure, closing a $50 million investment from SBI Group to complete its Series A round. The raise brings total funding for the round to $63 million, following an earlier $13 million tranche led by Sony Innovation Fund.
The capital injection signals growing institutional confidence in Startale’s strategy to merge blockchain infrastructure with traditional finance. The company is developing a vertically integrated ecosystem that spans tokenized securities, stablecoins, and consumer-facing onchain applications—all tailored for the Japanese market.
At the core of this strategy is Startale’s proprietary blockchain, Strium, designed to support settlement systems for tokenized equities, foreign exchange, and real-world assets. The network, launched earlier this year in collaboration with SBI, aims to provide the backbone for institutional-grade digital asset trading.
Alongside infrastructure, Startale is building out stablecoin offerings tied to both the Japanese yen and the U.S. dollar, as well as a “SuperApp” that integrates payments, asset management, and blockchain-based services into a single platform. The goal is to simplify onboarding and make onchain finance accessible to everyday users.
Startale CEO Sota Watanabe said the partnership with SBI will fast-track adoption, particularly in tokenized equities and yen-based stablecoins, with a strong focus on domestic markets this year.
The collaboration builds on a series of joint initiatives between the two firms. Over the past year, SBI and Startale have worked alongside partners like Circle and Ripple to explore stablecoin issuance and tokenized asset trading platforms in Japan.
They have also taken steps toward launching a fully regulated yen-backed stablecoin, expected to be issued through a subsidiary of SBI Shinsei Bank, positioning the project for compliance in both local and global settlement markets.
With fresh funding in place, Startale is now doubling down on scaling its infrastructure, expanding stablecoin usage, and refining its consumer products—betting that a unified, blockchain-powered financial stack will define the next phase of Japan’s digital economy.
