Uniswap’s “UNIfication” Plan Ignites UNI Surge with Token Burns and Fee Reforms

Uniswap’s native token, UNI, is soaring this week—outperforming Bitcoin, Ethereum, and most major cryptocurrencies—after the decentralized exchange unveiled its most ambitious overhaul yet.

Announced Monday, the “UNIfication” proposal from Uniswap Labs and the Uniswap Foundation marks a turning point for the DeFi giant. The plan aims to transform Uniswap’s massive $650 million in daily trading volume into a sustainable revenue engine through the activation of protocol fees and a perpetual UNI token burn.

By permanently removing tokens from circulation, this burn mechanism reduces supply and boosts scarcity—potentially increasing the value of remaining tokens. According to the proposal, Uniswap plans to retroactively burn around 100 million UNI from its treasury, effectively rewarding long-term supporters and tightening tokenomics.

The market response has been immediate. UNI surged 41.5% in the last 24 hours and is up 83% over the week, signaling renewed investor confidence.

Uniswap, the original decentralized exchange since its 2018 debut, has long been the leader in DeFi spot trading—generating over $1 billion in annual fees—yet until now, none of that revenue flowed back to token holders. The new framework seeks to change that by integrating fee-sharing and performance-based incentives into the core protocol.

Data from DeFiLlama shows Uniswap has accumulated $222 million in fees over the past month, pushing annualized revenue past $2 billion. In total, the protocol has earned $5.4 billion in cumulative fees, surpassing its total value locked (TVL) of $5 billion.

The UNIfication roadmap goes further than tokenomics. It introduces Protocol Fee Discount Auctions, designed to capture MEV (maximal extractable value) internally, and removes trading fees from Uniswap Labs’ front-end, wallet, and API—signaling a full pivot to ecosystem-wide growth.

A key highlight is the introduction of “aggregator hooks,” which will transform Uniswap v4 into an onchain liquidity aggregator capable of collecting fees from external sources, expanding its dominance beyond native pools.

“DeFi is entering an inflection point,” wrote Uniswap founders Hayden Adams, Ken Ng, and Devin Walsh. “Decentralized trading platforms are matching centralized exchanges in performance and scale, while institutions are increasingly building directly on DeFi rails.”

The proposal also hints at a new chapter for Uniswap under the Trump administration’s evolving regulatory climate, suggesting a cleaner path forward after years of legal scrutiny.

Looking ahead, Uniswap Labs plans to accelerate growth through builder grants, ecosystem partnerships, venture initiatives, and M&A, aiming to “unlock new value” and reinforce its position as the backbone of decentralized trading.

If approved, the UNIfication proposal could mark one of the most transformative milestones in Uniswap’s history—bridging community ownership, institutional adoption, and long-term token value in a single strategic pivot.
