MetaMask Token Nears Reality as Lubin Teases Surprise Timeline

Ethereum co-founder and Consensys CEO Joe Lubin has reignited speculation that MetaMask’s long-anticipated native token is finally around the corner. Speaking this week, Lubin said the MASK token is “on the way” and could arrive “sooner than you would expect,” prompting a surge of prediction-market bets on the launch date.

On Myriad Markets, traders currently see roughly a one-in-three chance of an official MetaMask token debut before November 1. Consensys hasn’t set a timeline, but Lubin confirmed that a token remains central to the wallet’s decentralization roadmap.

Created in 2016 and now a key revenue driver for Consensys, MetaMask has dangled the idea of a token since 2021 while cautioning users against scam airdrops. The team insists the goal is “progressive decentralization,” not a quick cash grab. Over the years, MetaMask has added staking and bridging, while Consensys launched the Linea layer-2 network and LINEA token—widely viewed as foundational steps toward a token economy.

A new MetaMask stablecoin, mUSD, now live on Ethereum and Linea, further suggests the ecosystem is preparing for a MASK rollout. Still, key questions remain: When will the token launch? What specific roles—governance, rewards, or new features—will it play? And how will distribution and regulatory hurdles be handled?

For now, Lubin’s “sooner than expected” tease is enough to keep traders guessing and the crypto community on alert for a potential MASK token surprise.
