Western Union Prepares USDPT Stablecoin Launch on Solana for 2026

Western Union is officially stepping into the stablecoin arena, announcing plans to introduce its own digital currency, USDPT, on the Solana blockchain by 2026. The move marks a major expansion of the payments giant’s decades-long evolution toward blockchain-based financial infrastructure.

The company revealed the initiative in a press release Tuesday, just a day after reporting a sharp uptick in digital wallet adoption in its third-quarter earnings. CEO Devin McGranahan said more than half of the firm’s digital transactions now come from wallets and account-based payouts — signaling a clear shift in user behavior toward faster, more flexible payment tools.

As part of its next phase, Western Union will roll out an “innovative Digital Asset Network” that supports the use of digital assets, including the ability to send, receive, hold, and spend USDPT directly through Western Union’s platform. The company says this will deliver a seamless user experience backed by its extensive global compliance and risk management framework.

The USDPT token will be issued by Anchorage Digital Bank, a federally chartered crypto bank, and will be tradable on select partner exchanges yet to be disclosed.

Western Union’s blockchain ambitions are not new — the company has been experimenting with distributed ledger technologies for years, including early pilot programs with Ripple Labs in 2018 to streamline cross-border payments.

McGranahan emphasized during Monday’s call that Western Union’s digital asset strategy has accelerated in recent months, in part due to legislative clarity provided by the GENIUS Act in the United States. In an earlier interview this year, he hinted that the firm had been exploring stablecoins to enable faster and more affordable remittance transfers — a natural evolution of its global payments business.

With USDPT’s 2026 debut, Western Union is positioning itself to merge its established international payments infrastructure with next-generation blockchain settlement, signaling a future where remittances and digital assets converge under one global brand.
