Metaplanet Surges to 10th-Largest Bitcoin Holder With $117M Buy, Nears 10K BTC Goal

Tokyo-based Metaplanet has made headlines once again, expanding its Bitcoin holdings to an impressive 8,888 BTC after purchasing an additional 1,088 BTC in its latest buy, valued at roughly $117.3 million. With this acquisition, Metaplanet has now reached 88.88% of its goal to hold 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025.

The company’s latest purchase came at an average price of $107,771 per BTC, pushing the average cost basis of its entire treasury to approximately $93,354 per BTC. The total investment now sits close to $829.7 million, and with current valuations, its Bitcoin stash is worth around $932.2 million, netting the firm an unrealized gain of about $102.5 million.

According to its disclosure, Metaplanet achieved a BTC yield of 95.6% from January to March 2025, and is currently tracking 66.3% for Q2 as of June 2.

This bold acquisition strategy has pushed Metaplanet past Block Inc., which holds 8,584 BTC, making it the 10th-largest publicly traded holder of Bitcoin globally. What’s more impressive is that Metaplanet began accumulating BTC only in April 2024, yet has already surpassed countries like El Salvador, whose national treasury currently holds 6,195.18 BTC.

Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich marked the moment with a symbolic statement:

“8888 BTC. A symbol of abundance. A number of fortune. And today our new reality. 8888 Bitcoin secured. A new chapter begins for Metaplanet.”

Bitcoin Treasury Trend Gains Global Momentum

Metaplanet is not alone in this strategic shift. Bitcoin adoption is accelerating across both private and public sectors:

  • Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) remains the largest holder with 580,250 BTC, and co-founder Michael Saylor has hinted at additional buys.

  • DDC Enterprise recently added 79 BTC, now holding 100 BTC.

  • Jetking, an Indian-listed firm, expanded to 21 BTC.

  • Méliuz in Brazil announced plans to raise R$450 million (~$78 million) to fund a large Bitcoin purchase following its treasury strategy pivot in May.

Governments Joining the Fray

Nation-states are also warming to Bitcoin. El Salvador continues to accumulate, and Panama is pushing boundaries with crypto-based financial services. At Bitcoin Conference 2025 in Las Vegas, Panama City’s mayor Mayer Mizrachi revealed plans for state-run Bitcoin savings accounts and crypto-integrated public banking, building on Tower Bank’s acceptance of Bitcoin tax payments.

With firms like Metaplanet spearheading the charge, Bitcoin's role as a modern-day treasury asset is becoming harder to ignore. As the race to 10,000 BTC intensifies, all eyes are on Tokyo’s newest crypto giant.
