Metaplanet Expands Bitcoin Treasury to 30,823 BTC With $623M Purchase

Metaplanet, Japan’s flagship bitcoin treasury firm, has expanded its crypto reserves with the acquisition of 5,268 BTC valued at 91.6 billion yen ($623 million). The purchase, completed at an average price of 17.4 million yen per coin (about $118,328), lifts Metaplanet’s total holdings to 30,823 BTC.
CEO Simon Gerovich confirmed on Wednesday that this milestone makes Metaplanet the fourth-largest publicly traded bitcoin treasury company worldwide, trailing only Strategy, MARA Holdings, and XXI.
This latest accumulation follows the company’s record-breaking $632 million bitcoin purchase announced on September 21, underscoring its aggressive treasury strategy.
Alongside its growing BTC reserves, Metaplanet reported strong business fundamentals, posting Q3 revenue of 2.438 billion yen ($16.5 million) — a 115.7% increase from the previous quarter. Gerovich highlighted that the results support the company’s planned $1.4 billion preferred share issuance, intended to further scale its bitcoin acquisition program. The firm also recently greenlit a U.S. subsidiary, Metaplanet Income Corp., to grow its “bitcoin income generation” arm focused on derivatives.
Market reactions remain mixed. While Metaplanet’s Tokyo-listed stock dropped 10.26% on Monday and is down 38% over the past month, its U.S.-traded shares (MTPLF) rose 8.86% to $3.96 on Tuesday, still reflecting a 48.3% gain year-to-date.
