Michigan Pension Fund Triples Bitcoin Bet, Now Holds $25M in Crypto

The State of Michigan Retirement System has significantly increased its exposure to Bitcoin, tripling its stake in the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) to 300,000 shares worth $11.4 million in Q2, up from 100,000 shares at the end of March, according to a new SEC filing.

This move expands the fund's crypto footprint to over $25 million, including a consistent holding of 460,000 shares in the Grayscale Ethereum Trust (ETHE), valued at approximately $13.6 million since September 2024.

With $19.3 billion in assets under management, the Michigan pension fund's growing investment in digital assets reflects a broader trend among state retirement systems. Similar shifts have been seen elsewhere—most notably, the State of Wisconsin Investment Board, which now owns more than 6 million shares of BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), currently worth $387.3 million.

Crypto's appeal to institutional investors lies in its evolving risk-reward profile. Metrics like the Sharpe ratio, which evaluates return relative to risk, have brought Bitcoin into focus for funds governed by strict investment guidelines.

Though cautious, these pension allocations suggest a growing belief in crypto’s long-term potential. The Michigan fund’s crypto positions still represent less than 0.1% of its cash portfolio—an approach that balances upside potential with protection against volatility.

Despite recent ETF outflows totaling $1.4 billion over four consecutive days, ARKB showed resilience, recording a minor outflow of $5.1 million last Friday alone.

Looking ahead, Standard Chartered forecasts that Bitcoin could reach $200,000 by the end of 2025, predicting that pension funds will be a key driver of institutional inflows. The bank expects capital from long-only funds to exceed 2024 levels, reinforcing crypto’s growing legitimacy among traditional investors.
