Warren and Waters Demand SEC Transparency on Trump’s Crypto Ties

Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Maxine Waters are pressing the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for transparency regarding former President Donald Trump’s involvement in cryptocurrency. In an April 2 letter, the two Democratic lawmakers urged acting SEC Chair Mark Uyeda to safeguard all records related to World Liberty Financial (WLFI), a crypto firm linked to Trump’s family.
Their concerns stem from what they describe as a potential conflict of interest, alleging that Trump’s financial stake in WLFI could influence the SEC’s regulatory decisions. The letter follows WLFI’s recent launch of USD1, a stablecoin on the BNB Chain and Ethereum, and comes amid Trump’s broader push into crypto, which includes a proposed national cryptocurrency stockpile and the launch of his own TRUMP memecoin.
“The American people deserve to know whether financial regulations are being shaped by impartial oversight or by the President’s personal financial interests,” Warren and Waters wrote. They argue that Trump’s crypto ventures could compromise the SEC’s independence, citing recent decisions by the agency to drop investigations into firms connected to Trump’s campaign donors.
The letter also coincides with the looming Senate Banking Committee vote on Paul Atkins, Trump’s expected pick to chair the SEC. If confirmed, Atkins could play a pivotal role in shaping U.S. crypto regulations.
With Trump’s deepening involvement in digital assets, scrutiny from lawmakers is unlikely to subside anytime soon. The battle over crypto oversight is now entangled with broader concerns about political influence and financial transparency.
