Visa Unveils AI Commerce Plans With Intelligent Payments Network

Visa is stepping further into the fast-evolving world of AI-driven commerce with the launch of a new platform designed to connect merchants directly to autonomous AI agents.
The payments giant introduced Intelligent Commerce Connect, a system aimed at making product inventories both discoverable and purchasable by AI agents acting on behalf of consumers. Positioned as a universal entry point into agentic commerce, the platform functions as a network and protocol layer that bridges merchants, developers, and AI ecosystems.
Through a single integration with Visa’s acceptance infrastructure, businesses can enable AI agents to browse catalogs, select products, and complete transactions seamlessly. The system handles critical functions such as payment initiation, tokenization, authentication, and spending controls, all while maintaining compliance with industry security standards.
Unlike traditional payment rails, Intelligent Commerce Connect is built to support both Visa and non-Visa cards, giving it broader flexibility across digital ecosystems. It also integrates with leading AI agent frameworks, allowing developers to deploy autonomous agents capable of executing purchases within predefined user permissions.
The move comes as blockchain networks like Ethereum, Tron, and Solana, along with fintech firms, race to establish themselves as infrastructure layers for AI-powered payments.
Visa’s system is currently being tested with select partners, with a wider rollout expected later in 2026. The launch builds on its earlier experimentation with “Visa CLI,” a tool introduced in March that enabled AI agents to execute same-day payments.
In parallel, fintech firm Nevermined has already integrated the new platform using Coinbase’s x402 protocol. This integration allows AI agents to autonomously purchase digital goods and services while operating within user-defined spending limits.
Under this model, users can link their Visa cards and define guardrails, while AI agents independently carry out transactions within those constraints. Merchants, meanwhile, continue receiving payments through their existing systems without needing additional infrastructure changes.
The x402 protocol, which enables programmatic payment requests between AI agents and merchants, has already seen strong early traction, processing $24 million in transaction volume over the past month.
With Intelligent Commerce Connect, Visa is positioning itself at the center of a rapidly emerging economy where AI agents don’t just assist users—but actively transact on their behalf.
