Axie Infinity Defies Market Fear as AXS Stages a Surprise Comeback

While much of the cryptocurrency market remains under pressure from global uncertainty, Axie Infinity has resurfaced as an unlikely outperformer. Its native token, AXS, has surged past the $2.4 mark, fully recovering from the steep sell-off seen in October last year and standing out against a broadly cautious market backdrop.

Since the start of the year, AXS has gained more than 200%, supported by daily trading volumes that have consistently crossed $1 billion. The move initially followed the announcement of a redesigned reward structure, where in-game incentives transition into a new app-based token, bAXS. This token can be used within Axie’s core ecosystem and staked for additional perks, adding a fresh layer of utility for existing players.

What surprised traders was the rally’s persistence. Even as the wider crypto market corrected, AXS continued to climb, suggesting demand was not purely reactionary. A major source of momentum has come from South Korea, where local traders have shown strong appetite for the token. One exchange alone accounted for nearly a third of global AXS volume, with prices trading at a noticeable premium compared to international platforms—an indication that buyers there are positioning for further upside.

This renewed interest also reflects a broader trend of capital rotating back into older GameFi projects once written off as past-cycle phenomena. Familiar names appear to be benefiting from renewed attention as traders search for narratives beyond Bitcoin and large-cap assets.

However, the rally is not without risks. On-chain data shows a steady rise in AXS balances held on exchanges, signaling that more tokens are becoming available for potential selling. Deposit activity has climbed to levels not seen in years, and several large holders have recently moved funds to major trading venues—often a precursor to profit-taking.

At the same time, growth within Axie’s underlying ecosystem remains muted. New user activity on the Ronin network is a fraction of what it was during its peak, highlighting the ongoing challenge of expanding beyond a saturated play-to-earn audience. Without meaningful user growth, sustaining long-term value could prove difficult.

Speculation has also intensified. Open interest in AXS derivatives has climbed to its highest level in three years, pointing to heavy use of leverage. In volatile conditions, this increases the risk of sharp pullbacks driven by liquidations if sentiment turns.

AXS’s strength in a fearful market underscores how powerful narrative shifts and regional demand can be. Whether this recovery evolves into a durable trend will depend on continued demand, ecosystem growth, and the market’s ability to absorb rising sell-side pressure in an increasingly volatile environment.
