Coinbase Gets CFTC Approval to Clear Crypto Derivatives In-House

Coinbase has received approval from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to operate Coinbase Clearing LLC as a registered derivatives clearing organization, giving the exchange control over another key part of its regulated derivatives business.
The approval allows Coinbase Clearing to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps. The company said the move completes its core regulated derivatives infrastructure, adding clearing capabilities to its existing futures commission merchant (FCM) and designated contract market (DCM) registrations.
Coinbase said the new setup will allow it to create and settle fully collateralized contracts directly rather than relying entirely on external clearing firms. The exchange expects this to support faster product development, more streamlined operations and greater flexibility when launching additional regulated derivatives products.
The CFTC authorization comes with limits. Coinbase Clearing is restricted to fully funded contracts and cannot clear leveraged derivatives. Coinbase will therefore continue working with outside clearing partners for products that require margin, including its existing margined derivatives business and the planned launch of single-stock perpetual contracts.
The company described Coinbase Clearing as a USDC-native clearinghouse, highlighting its focus on fully collateralized products.
The new approval could also provide Coinbase with infrastructure that might eventually support additional onchain derivatives markets. One possibility is a potential role in a U.S.-focused HIP-3 market on Hyperliquid, although Coinbase has not announced such a plan.
A similar structure was proposed earlier by Payward, the parent company of Kraken. Its plan involves Bitnomial Exchange listing and clearing contracts for eligible U.S. customers, while NinjaTrader Clearing would handle client accounts and Hyperliquid's onchain order book would match trades.
However, any connection between Coinbase Clearing and a future HIP-3 market remains speculative. Coinbase's current authorization only covers fully collateralized products, while the proposed Payward structure is still awaiting regulatory approval.
