Grayscale Plans First-Ever Zcash ETF as Privacy Coin Mania Explodes

Grayscale Investments is making a decisive move into the fast-rising privacy-coin sector, announcing plans to convert its long-running Zcash Trust into a fully tradable exchange-traded fund. The filing, submitted Wednesday to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, marks the firm’s boldest push yet into privacy-focused digital assets—potentially creating the first ETF in the U.S. that offers direct exposure to Zcash.

Zcash has become one of the most talked-about cryptocurrencies of the year, fueled by a dramatic surge of nearly 1,000% over the past 12 months. Its defining feature—the ability to shield transaction data using zero-knowledge cryptography—has captivated traders seeking alternatives to Bitcoin’s fully transparent ledger. High-profile endorsements across social platforms helped amplify the attention, driving a wave of fresh demand as concerns over blockchain traceability grew.

In its filing, Grayscale underscored that while Zcash shares structural similarities with Bitcoin, the two networks diverge significantly when it comes to user privacy. The firm highlighted Zcash’s “selective privacy-preserving features,” a capability that has become especially relevant since September when debates intensified over governments’ increasing ability to analyze Bitcoin activity.

The potential ETF conversion comes as part of Grayscale’s broader strategy to upgrade its legacy trusts into more flexible, investor-friendly products. Earlier this year, the company successfully transitioned its flagship Bitcoin and Ethereum trusts into spot ETFs following SEC approval—funds that have since drawn massive inflows. Grayscale now also offers ETFs tied to Solana, Dogecoin, and XRP, expanding its footprint across multiple blockchain ecosystems.

If approved, Grayscale’s Zcash ETF could solidify ZEC’s position as the leading privacy asset in mainstream markets—putting the spotlight back on a coin built for financial confidentiality at a moment when privacy is becoming a central topic across the crypto landscape.
