Bitcoin ETFs Shed Nearly $4 Billion in Five-Week Slide as Outflows Persist

Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds in the United States recorded another wave of redemptions on Thursday, stretching a five-week streak of capital flight that has drained close to $4 billion from the products.
Data from SoSoValue shows that spot Bitcoin ETFs posted $165.76 million in net outflows on February 19, marking the third straight session of withdrawals. Since mid-January, weekly outflows have totaled $403.9 million, $359.9 million, $318.1 million, $1.49 billion, and $1.33 billion, pushing cumulative losses during the period to just under $4 billion.
The persistent redemptions have raised fresh questions about institutional demand for Bitcoin exposure through ETFs. Some market observers see the move as a temporary reset after a strong start to the year, while others interpret it as a sign that investors are reassessing risk amid ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty.
Despite the steady capital exits from ETFs, Bitcoin’s price has shown resilience. The asset climbed roughly 1.4% over the past 24 hours to trade near $67,800, helping lift the broader crypto market’s total capitalization by about 1.6% to $2.4 trillion. Several major altcoins, including Hyperliquid, Avalanche, and Sui, also posted gains of around 4% during the same period.
The divergence between ETF flows and price action suggests that redemptions may not be directly driving market weakness. Instead, ETFs appear to be reacting to broader sentiment shifts rather than dictating them. In recent weeks, Bitcoin has struggled to sustain strong bullish momentum as investors weigh competing narratives.
On one hand, gold’s rally has tempered Bitcoin’s appeal as a digital store of value. On the other, enthusiasm around artificial intelligence and technology stocks has attracted speculative capital that might otherwise flow into crypto markets. This rotation into equities has coincided with softer demand for Bitcoin-linked investment vehicles.
Market data also indicates that recent price rebounds have occurred on lighter trading volumes, hinting at cautious buyer participation. If conviction remains limited, consolidation could persist, or the market may face another decisive move before selling pressure fully subsides.
For now, while ETF redemptions continue to mount, cumulative inflows since the products launched remain firmly positive. Whether the recent streak represents a deeper cooling of institutional appetite or merely a phase of portfolio rebalancing may depend on Bitcoin’s ability to regain sustained upward momentum in the weeks ahead.
