Metaplanet’s $15.2M Bitcoin Buy Pushes Holdings Past 20,000 BTC as 2025 Goal Nears

Metaplanet Inc. has strengthened its Bitcoin position with the purchase of 136 BTC, valued at roughly $15.2 million, as the Tokyo-listed investment firm races toward its ambitious treasury targets.

The latest acquisition, disclosed in a filing on Monday, was made at an average price of $111,666 (¥16.55 million) per coin. This raises Metaplanet’s total Bitcoin stash to 20,136 BTC, worth around $2.08 billion (¥304.6 billion) at an average cost of $103,196 (¥15.1 million). The firm now ranks as the sixth-largest publicly traded corporate Bitcoin holder.

Having already secured 67% of its 2025 target of 30,000 BTC, the company must acquire nearly 10,000 more coins within the next 16 months to stay on track. For its 2026 milestone of 100,000 BTC, however, it still faces the steep challenge of accumulating an additional 70,000.

This marks a sharp escalation from Metaplanet’s original roadmap, which only aimed for 10,000 BTC by 2025 and 21,000 by 2026. The pivot underscores growing institutional conviction, with Bitcoin treasuries collectively controlling more than one million BTC—around 5% of the circulating supply. Analysts suggest that if buying momentum persists while selling pressure declines, price surges could follow, albeit tempered by new supply entering the market.

To support its expansion, Metaplanet recently won shareholder approval for an $884 million capital raise, balancing debt and equity issuance to avoid near-term liquidity risks. Despite this aggressive strategy, the company’s stock has faced setbacks, falling about 65% from its 2025 peak of $13.20 (¥1,930) to $4.60 (¥680) as of today.
