Riot Platforms Sells $250M in Bitcoin as AI Pivot Accelerates Plans

Publicly traded crypto miner Riot Platforms offloaded more than $250 million worth of Bitcoin during the first quarter of 2026, signaling a continued shift in strategy as the firm leans deeper into artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.

In total, Riot sold 3,778 BTC at an average price exceeding $76,000 per coin. Following the sales, its treasury dropped to 15,680 BTC by the end of Q1, currently valued at roughly $1.04 billion with Bitcoin trading near $66,800.

This marks the second consecutive quarter of notable Bitcoin liquidations for Riot, after it previously generated close to $200 million from BTC sales toward the end of 2025. While the company has not explicitly confirmed how the latest proceeds will be allocated, earlier guidance from CEO Jason Les pointed to funding operational growth and expansion initiatives.

Those initiatives are increasingly centered around AI and data center infrastructure. Riot has emphasized plans to repurpose its substantial power capacity—previously dedicated almost entirely to Bitcoin mining—toward high-demand computing applications.

The broader mining sector is undergoing a similar transformation. Competitors like Bitfarms and MARA Holdings have also taken steps to reallocate resources, including large-scale Bitcoin sales, to support their own AI ambitions. MARA, for instance, recently sold around $1.1 billion worth of BTC, partly to restructure debt and strengthen its balance sheet.

Riot’s leadership has framed this shift as a defining moment for the company. Earlier this year, Les described 2025 as a turning point, highlighting efforts to unlock nearly two gigawatts of power capacity for next-generation data center development. The long-term vision, according to the firm, is to fully transition its infrastructure toward supporting compute-intensive workloads beyond crypto mining.

Pressure to move quickly is mounting. Activist investor Starboard Value has urged Riot to accelerate its AI strategy, suggesting the opportunity could add as much as $21 billion to the company’s valuation if executed effectively.

Despite these ambitions, Riot’s stock has struggled in recent months, falling over 33% amid a broader market downturn that has seen Bitcoin retreat significantly from its all-time high of $126,080.
