Bitcoin Faces Mounting Pressure as ETF Outflows and Derivatives Data Flash Warning Signs

Bitcoin has slipped sharply from the $82,000 range to around $76,800 within days, erasing a portion of its recent rally from $60,000 and raising fresh concerns across the crypto market. While a 6% drop may appear to be a normal cooldown after weeks of gains, several market indicators suggest traders are preparing for a potentially larger downturn.

One of the clearest warning signs has emerged from U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs. Data from SoSoValue shows the 11 funds have recorded more than $1.5 billion in outflows since May 7. Monday alone saw investors withdraw $648 million — the largest single-day outflow since late January and the second time within a week that redemptions crossed the $600 million mark.

Those withdrawals have wiped out much of the buying momentum seen earlier this month, leaving spot Bitcoin ETFs with net outflows of roughly $396 million since the start of May. The scale and consistency of the selling suggest institutional investors are becoming increasingly cautious.

Market activity in both spot and futures trading is also signaling stronger bearish sentiment. Cumulative Volume Delta (CVD), a metric used to track whether aggressive buyers or sellers are controlling the market, has turned sharply negative.

According to Glassnode data, spot market CVD across major exchanges plunged from positive $16.9 million to negative $126.2 million during the recent decline, indicating that sellers are aggressively offloading positions. Futures markets are showing similar behavior, with perpetual futures CVD sliding to negative $368.5 million as traders continue to increase short-term selling pressure.

The options market is adding another layer of concern. Traders appear to be paying increasingly higher premiums for put options, which are commonly used as protection against falling prices. Glassnode’s options delta skew climbed from 10.9% to 14.4%, reflecting growing demand for downside hedging and suggesting market participants expect further volatility ahead.

Broader weakness in traditional financial markets has also contributed to the risk-off environment, adding pressure to crypto assets. Analysts are now closely watching the $76,000 level as Bitcoin’s immediate support, with a larger demand zone sitting between $74,000 and $75,000.

A decisive break below those levels could trigger a steeper correction as investor sentiment continues to weaken amid rising defensive positioning across crypto derivatives markets.
