Metaplanet Doubles Down: 780 BTC Added as Firm Targets 100,000 Bitcoin by 2026

Tokyo-based Metaplanet has reinforced its aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy, announcing the acquisition of 780 BTC this week—bringing its total holdings to over 17,000 BTC, now worth more than $2 billion. The move is part of a broader pivot toward digital asset treasury management, setting the company apart as one of Asia’s most ambitious corporate Bitcoin holders.

According to a corporate filing released Monday, Metaplanet has funded its expanding Bitcoin reserves through both capital market activities and operating income. In July alone, the firm issued more than 23 million shares in three tranches, using proceeds to redeem existing corporate debt and fund further Bitcoin purchases.

This latest purchase aligns with Metaplanet’s updated "555 Million Plan," a dramatic revision of its earlier roadmap that initially targeted 21,000 BTC by 2026. The new goal? 100,000 BTC by the end of 2026, and a staggering 210,000 BTC by 2027. At current prices around $119,200 per Bitcoin, the firm would require roughly $10 billion—and monthly buys of nearly 5,000 BTC—to stay on pace.

While the company’s ambition has attracted investor attention, analysts caution that Metaplanet’s continued momentum will depend heavily on public market appetite for its securities—especially if the current bull market loses steam.

Having launched its crypto strategy in 2024, Metaplanet now stands just behind MicroStrategy in sheer ambition. CEO Simon Gerovich has also emerged as a key figure in Japan's growing institutional push into digital assets, recently appearing as an individual investor in multiple blockchain-oriented initiatives across Asia.
