Zcash’s Shielded Surge: 4.5 Million ZEC Locked as Privacy Demand Drives Market Revival

Zcash (ZEC), once considered a relic of the early privacy coin era, is making an unexpected and powerful comeback. In a market still gripped by caution, Zcash has emerged as one of the few altcoins attracting intense investor attention—thanks to a significant milestone that underscores its renewed relevance.

This month, the network’s shielded pool surpassed 4.5 million ZEC, marking a strong resurgence in the adoption of privacy technology. Over just three weeks, nearly 1 million ZEC were moved into shielded pools, coinciding with a fivefold price increase. But instead of cashing out for short-term gains, most holders opted to continue transferring their funds into shielded wallets—a move that reflects conviction, not speculation.

Shielding in Zcash refers to the process of converting coins from transparent addresses (t-addresses) to shielded ones (z-addresses or u-addresses). These shielded transactions use zk-SNARKs to conceal the sender, receiver, and transaction amount, while still maintaining blockchain integrity and transparency.

Josh Swihart, CEO of Electric Coin Co., highlighted this unique market behavior, saying that the expanding shielded pool acts as a bullish signal:

“Those who shield their ZEC don’t sell.”

With 4.5 million ZEC, or roughly 27.5% of the circulating supply, now hidden within shielded pools, the available liquid supply continues to shrink. This reduction may place further upward pressure on the price if demand continues to build.

Victor, a developer within the Zcash ecosystem, described the shift as proof of genuine adoption rather than speculative hype:

“Normal crypto behavior: pump → exchange → dump.
Zcash behavior: pump → shield → zodl.
This isn’t speculation. It’s adoption of privacy tech.”

As the privacy narrative regains strength in a market wary of surveillance and overregulation, Zcash’s renewed traction could mark the start of a broader movement—one where digital privacy becomes a feature investors actively seek, not a forgotten ideal.
