Bitcoin Dips Below $87K as Trump’s Tariff Decision Sparks Market Turmoil

Bitcoin (BTC) tumbled below the $87,000 mark on Monday as financial markets reacted sharply to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s confirmation that his administration’s tariff policy on Canadian and Mexican imports would proceed as planned. The announcement triggered a sell-off across multiple asset classes, amplifying ongoing concerns within the crypto space.
Crypto Market Decline Deepens
Bitcoin slid nearly 8% within 24 hours, hitting a local low of $86,700—its weakest level since February 2. As of press time, BTC was trading at $89,131, reflecting a 6.68% daily decline.
The broader digital asset market, already reeling from the fallout of the Bybit exchange hack, saw intensified selling pressure after Trump reiterated his stance on tariffs. On February 24, he stated:
“The tariffs are going forward on time, on schedule.”
The impending measures, set to take effect on March 4, include a 25% tariff on all Canadian and Mexican imports and a 10% levy on Canadian energy resources. The policy, justified by concerns over illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking, has injected further uncertainty into financial markets.
Altcoins Plunge Amidst Market Sell-Off
Major altcoins suffered significant losses as the market downturn deepened. Ethereum (ETH) plunged 10.61% to $2,523.37, while XRP fell 10.85% to $2.30. Solana (SOL) was among the hardest-hit assets, shedding 14.85% and dropping to $143.13.
Cardano (ADA) mirrored the trend, losing 10.96% to trade at $0.6859, while Binance Coin (BNB) registered a comparatively milder decline of 6.55%, settling at $615.13.
The mass sell-off resulted in the liquidation of approximately $800 million in leveraged positions, with long positions accounting for nearly $600 million of the losses. The rapid devaluation led to margin calls across multiple exchanges, adding further downward pressure to digital assets.
Growing Market Uncertainty
The latest price drop underscores the crypto market’s susceptibility to global economic and geopolitical shifts. Analysts predict heightened volatility as investors gauge the potential impact of escalating trade tensions and regulatory challenges on the sector.
The possibility of retaliatory measures from Canada and Mexico could further shake investor confidence, increasing market fluctuations in the weeks ahead. With the March 4 tariff deadline looming, traders remain on high alert for additional developments that could drive further instability.
While the cryptocurrency market has previously weathered macroeconomic disruptions, the combination of trade policy shifts, security breaches, and liquidation cascades is fueling unprecedented turbulence. As investors brace for further uncertainty, the coming weeks may prove crucial in determining the next phase of market dynamics.
