Bitcoin Pushes Past $79K as Bulls Return and Short Sellers Feel the Heat

Bitcoin regained momentum on Wednesday, climbing beyond the $79,000 mark and reaching its highest level in months as bullish sentiment strengthened across the crypto market.

The world’s leading cryptocurrency posted a 4.5% gain over the last 24 hours, sparking a wider rally among major digital assets. Ethereum, BNB, Solana, and XRP all moved higher, while the broader CoinDesk 20 Index rose 3.5%.

Crypto-related equities also benefited from the renewed enthusiasm. Strategy, known for holding one of the largest corporate Bitcoin treasuries, soared 10%. Circle Internet advanced 9%, while Coinbase added 6%. Bitcoin mining firms MARA Holdings and Riot Platforms also posted gains between 6% and 7%.

Traditional markets added to the positive backdrop. The S&P 500 climbed 0.9%, and the Nasdaq rose 1.3% to fresh record levels, reinforcing a risk-friendly environment that often benefits crypto assets.

Investor sentiment improved after U.S. President Donald Trump stated late Tuesday that he would continue the Iran ceasefire while keeping a naval blockade around the Strait of Hormuz. Although geopolitical uncertainty remains, markets interpreted the move as a temporary easing of tensions.

Analysts say Bitcoin’s short-term path is still closely tied to macroeconomic and global political developments.Bitcoin at $72,000 remains a critical support level, while resistance may emerge near the $79,000 to $80,000 range as traders lock in profits.

However, derivatives data suggests Bitcoin may have room to climb further. Perpetual futures traders remain heavily bearish, with funding rates near their lowest levels in almost three years. At the same time, open interest continues to rise, indicating fresh leveraged positions entering the market.

This combination of growing leverage and negative funding rates signals that many traders are betting against Bitcoin. If prices continue upward, those short positions could be forced to close rapidly, creating a short squeeze that drives Bitcoin even higher.

The $79,000 to $80,000 zone is especially important because it aligns with the average entry price of short-term holders—investors who tend to react quickly to volatility and often sell during rallies.

For now, Bitcoin is testing that resistance level. A decisive breakout above it could confirm stronger bullish momentum, while rejection may trigger renewed selling pressure from traders looking to secure recent gains.
