Bitcoin Pushes Above $72,000 as Bulls Regain Control

Bitcoin extended its recent advance on Thursday, trading around $72,230 at the time of writing after breaking decisively above the $72,000 mark.

The move keeps the cryptocurrency firmly in recovery mode after a strong run higher this week. Bitcoin has pushed through several resistance levels as traders respond to a combination of improving regulatory expectations and supportive macro developments in the U.S.

One of the key catalysts behind the broader rally has been the U.S. Treasury's plan to increase government debt buybacks. The announcement helped improve sentiment across risk assets, while President Donald Trump's renewed call for Congress to advance the Clarity Act added another boost for the crypto market.

The strength has not been limited to Bitcoin. Crypto-related stocks have also moved sharply higher as investors position for a potentially friendlier regulatory environment for digital assets.

Strategy, the world's largest publicly traded corporate Bitcoin holder, has been among the notable beneficiaries. Crypto exchange operator Bullish has also posted strong gains, while Bitcoin miners and Coinbase have participated in the broader sector rally.

Bitcoin's latest move is also important from a technical perspective.

The cryptocurrency is now trading well above its 200-day simple moving average, which was previously around $68,969. The 200-day average is closely followed by traders as a gauge of Bitcoin's longer-term market trend. Remaining above it strengthens the argument that the market's broader structure has turned more constructive.

Bitcoin has also moved comfortably above the estimated short-term holder cost basis of $67,138. That metric represents the average price paid for coins held for less than 155 days. With BTC now more than $5,000 above that level, recent buyers are sitting on unrealized gains.

That can create a more favorable market backdrop. Instead of investors who bought recently facing losses and selling pressure, profitable holders may be more willing to maintain their positions or add to them if momentum continues.

The next major level traders are watching is considerably higher.

The True Market Mean sits near $75,689, according to the cited on-chain analysis. This metric attempts to measure the cost basis of active Bitcoin investors while excluding coins that are believed to be permanently lost or have remained dormant for long periods.

A sustained move toward and eventually above $75,689 would therefore represent an important test for the current rally. Clearing that level could strengthen the case that Bitcoin has moved into a broader bullish phase rather than simply staging a short-term rebound.

For now, the chart shows Bitcoin holding above $72,000 after briefly pushing toward the $72,400 area. The market is consolidating near its latest highs rather than immediately giving back the breakout.

That leaves $72,000 as an important near-term psychological level. Holding above it could keep the upside momentum intact, while a deeper pullback would bring the recent breakout levels back into focus.

With Bitcoin now trading at roughly $72,230.9, attention is shifting toward whether bulls can turn the latest breakout into a sustained move toward the mid-$70,000 range.
