Fortnite Crosses Over To Cryptocurrency As It Adds Monero As A Payment Option

On 1st January 2019, the Monero team tweeted news regarding its addition as a payment option on Fortnite Retail Row. Notably, users will be able to pay “exclusively” in the cryptocurrency in addition to the existing modes of payment. Fortnite Retail Row hosts Fortnite, an online game released in mid-2017.

According to a report, Fortnite is one of Epic Games’ top grossing games since launch. Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, said in February 2018 that the game’s concurrent player numbers hit 3.4 million. Notably, the website recorded the numbers in a single day.

Monero has unique properties

As per the firm, the game’s growth in the first months of 2018 was beyond expectations. As such, the team was contending outages and congestion. This resulted from the fact that scaling a game which people play online is quite a huge challenge.

To deliver the possibility of payments in Monero, Epic Games sought services of GloBee. GloBee is a payments company that focuses providing the link between cryptocurrency and traditional finance. Notably, the firm supports various cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ripple. However, the addition of Monero is down to the coin’s privacy capabilities.

Interestingly, the addition of Monero onto the Fortnite Retail Row platform is as surprising to the Monero team. Apparently, the team at Monero learnt about the reports via social media. Epic Games tweeted the news, which Monero carried and published on its handle.

Players to earn crypto by betting on themselves

According to the team behind Fortnite, the addition of Monero is not their first cross-over to cryptocurrency. Since Unikrn launched UMode, users playing Fortnite are able to earn cryptocurrency. In particular, UMode provides a platform where users can bet on a player-vs-house basis. As such, the users are able to earn cryptocurrency or fiat depending on their preference. Notably, players can bet on themselves in a matchmaking gameplay, SludgeFeed reports.

According to Rahul Sood, Unikrn CEO, gamers can bet on themselves while engaged in games like Fortnite and others. In particularly, the players have the option of placing bets in a currency of choice. This is to say that one can place a bet in cryptocurrency of fiat.

However, the platform encourages players to bet in UnikoinGold (UKG), a native cryptocurrency on the Unikrn platform. As per the platform, placing a bet in UKG will win the player more bonuses compared to other currencies.
