Zcash Network Scare Traced to Explorer Sync Issues Following Upgrade

Zcash users briefly faced uncertainty on Wednesday after several blockchain explorers appeared to show that the network had stopped producing new blocks for more than four hours. The anomaly raised concerns that transaction processing on the privacy-focused blockchain had stalled, potentially preventing new transfers from being confirmed.

Blockchain explorers indicated that block 3,364,601, generated at 5:27 UTC on June 3, was the last recorded block for an extended period. Given that Zcash typically creates a new block roughly every 75 seconds, the absence of updates quickly drew attention across the crypto community.

However, early indications suggest the issue was not caused by the Zcash blockchain itself. According to industry observers, the apparent outage stemmed from certain block explorers failing to properly synchronize after a recent network upgrade. As a result, these services displayed outdated blockchain data despite the network continuing to function.

Mert Mumtaz, CEO of infrastructure provider Helius, stated that some explorers had not updated their nodes following the upgrade and were actively working to restore accurate reporting. The explanation helped ease concerns that the network had suffered a major operational failure.

The incident highlights the distinction between a blockchain and the third-party tools used to monitor it. While explorers provide visibility into network activity, technical issues affecting those services can sometimes create the impression of blockchain disruptions even when the underlying protocol remains operational.

Despite the temporary confusion, Zcash's native cryptocurrency, ZEC, has remained resilient. The token has climbed roughly 8% over the past week and is up approximately 46% over the last month, outperforming many digital assets during a period of broader market weakness.

The episode serves as a reminder that infrastructure surrounding blockchain networks—including explorers, wallets, and node operators—plays a crucial role in maintaining transparency and user confidence, particularly after major software upgrades.
