Zcash (ZEC) is an open source and decentralized cryptocurrency which focuses on delivering enhanced privacy to its users. Details of the sender, recipient and transaction value can be hidden. The Zcash blockchain is public, with the optional ability to shield transaction information if the user so wishes.

Zcash initially came from the Zerocoin protocol – a proposal by Matthew D. Green, a cryptographer at Jon Hopkins University for increasing the privacy features of Bitcoin. The project became Zerocash, before finally developing into Zcash in 2016. The project is led by Zooko Wilcox-O’Hearn, and features the team of researchers and engineers responsible for authoring the Zcash’s unique privacy features.

Although the Zcash blockchain is public, it still maintains fungibility by encrypting every transaction on the blockchain. By creating coins free of a transaction history, every coin’s value can remain the same. This protects coins from a fluctuating value based on where they’ve been previously. Zcash promote themselves as the ‘https’ version of Bitcoin.
