About

Stellar (XLM) is an open-source money and value exchange protocol which enables fast payments with low fees. The Stellar project uses the XLM coin, or lumen, as the native asset of the network. Lumens (XLM) are not mineable, and the 100 billion which were released at launch are all there will ever be.

Stellar was founded in 2014 by Jed McCaleb and Joyce Kim. Stellar was initially going to be based on the Ripple protocol, but the developers decided to construct their own code in 2015. Stellar is backed by the non-profit organization Stellar Development Foundation, who state their objective is to spread financial access and literacy across the world.

Stellar have announced several high-profile partnerships since their launch. October 2017 saw computing giants IBM, and payment service KlickEx declared their partnership with the Stellar project, which they propose to use as a cross-border payments solution. Stellar is decentralized and is not controlled by its developers.
